With that, the Hurst Performance legend Doc Watson introduced the company’s latest creation, the Hurst Dodge Challenger. Officials with the Flint Visitors and Convention Bureau said they believe it is the first time a Dodge vehicle has been unveiled in Flint.

Back to the Bricks: Woman uses car to spread message of cancer awareness

B2B breast cancer carFLINT — Karen Borton’s 1969 Buick Skylark is more than a just another classic car, it’s a rolling billboard for cancer prevention.

Borton is a three-time cancer survivor and she lost her mother to the disease.

“I don’t want … anybody to go through what I had to go through,” Borton said.

Borton accepts donations, with every penny going to Breast Cancer Awareness for Life, which is run by Borton and her friend, Norma Santerre. The group works with several cancer awareness agencies.

Borton said that one in eight women will get breast cancer and one in four families are touched by the disease.

“That’s unacceptable,” she said.

While those statistics are familiar to many, she told me one surprising statistic: 70 percent of all lumps are found by a woman’s mate, while just 5 percent are found by mammography. Sounds like a good reason to check.

Back to the Bricks: This Corvette is no trailer queen

Ron Miller of East Lansing is happy to share his 1961 Corvette with fans, even letting them sit inside if they want.

Ron Miller of East Lansing is happy to share his 1961 Corvette with fans, even letting them sit inside if they want.

FLINT — Car show visitors are used to the familiar refrain: Look but do not touch. Take all the pictures you want, but do not touch. Enjoy, but do not touch.

Ron Miller of East Lansing has a different take. He wants to share his 1961 Chevy Corvette with car show goers. Miller was at Back to the Bricks in Flint over the weekend, displaying his car, but also inviting show visitors to take a seat behind the wheel.

“I encourage people to get in,” Miller said. “I enjoy other people enjoying it.”

Miller said that he bought the car about 25 years ago when it was in boxes. He’s had professional help with the engine and paint, but he’s done a lot of the restoration work himself.

He has done a lot of the body work, chrome and stainless steel trim pieces himself.

“It’s not perfect and I’m not going to make it perfect,” Miller said.

Feel free to touch, if you want.

Visit Michigan wllz later this week for more stories from Bricks.

Back to the Bricks: Five years of growth, five days of automotive fun

FLINT — When Bruno Vallecorsa of Columbiaville says his 1976 Lincoln Continental Mark IV is original, really means it. Even the tires are the ones that came with the car.

OK, it’s not completely original. The battery has been replaced. But the paint, the upholstery, even the Michelin tires are all original.

Woodward Dream Cruise: Whether the classic is perfect or not, you know its owner loves it

superbird blue flames

Up and down the Woodward Dream Cruise, you’ll see pristine classics that look as though their owners rarely allow them to see the light of day. Cars so perfect that in many cases, they’re better than when the first rolled off the assembly line. We’re talking bolts that are polished to the point that they glisten. Engine bays that are lovingly waxed to a shine that is better than the exterior of some daily drivers (mine included).

But for every one of those pampered beauties there are also several classics that are a little less polished, but no less loved. Some cruisers tell you about their project car sitting in the garage, awaiting its owner’s time and money. Others have their pride and joy to the point that they are road worthy, even if they aren’t quite ready for prime time. Like the white Amphicar with the green door — still a little work needed. Woodward Dream Cruise 2009: Getting an early start

Ford

hot rodSo the Woodward Dream Cruise is on Saturday, huh? Tell that to the 10s of thousands of people lining the avenue from Pontiac to Eight Mile Road, not to mention the thousands of cruisers moving in the rolling parking lot that was northbound Woodward Friday evening.

Yeah, that’s right, northbound. While those heading south seemed to have endless stretches of open blacktop, those heading north did so at a pace barely above walking speed. Oh well, better to ogle the rolling sculpture that was everywhere.

Some random thoughts and fun stuff from this year’s cruise:
