GM has decided to pull back the Buick crossover it had announced earlyer this month.

At first, when I heard that General Motors had dropped plans for a new Buick sport utility vehicle, I was disappointed. But after further reflection, I realized that this could be a sign that GM really will start listening to what consumers want.

General Motors expects Buick/'s as-yet unnamed crossover to be the first plug-in hybrid vehicle to be offered by a major automaker.

TRAVERSE CITY — Buick will debut what General Motors is calling the first plug-in hybrid vehicle from a major automaker in 2011.

Tom Stephens, GM’s head of product development, told the Center for Automotive Research’s Management Briefing Seminars autos conference, that Buick would launch a new five-passenger crossover in 2010 with the plug-in hybrid to come in 2011.

The plug-in version of the as-yet unnamed vehicle will have 270-horsepower version of GM’s 3.6-liter direct injection V-6. It will use a new version of GM’s Two-Mode hybrid system first seen on the Chevrolet Tahoe. It will be capable of driving on battery power alone at low speeds for up to 10 miles. The company said that although fuel economy numbers have not been set yet, it is possible that it will be able to double the mileage of the same vehicle without the hybrid system.
